More Than Digging a Hole

Planting that actually works

The difference between a tree that thrives for 50 years and one that struggles for 5 is almost always the planting. Species selection, hole depth, root preparation, and post-planting care all matter more than most people realize.

Right Plant, Right Place

Species selection matters more than most people realize. We match your tree to your soil type, sun exposure, and available space — so it actually thrives long-term.

Site-Specific Planning

We assess drainage, proximity to structures, overhead utility lines, and underground conflicts before recommending placement. No surprises five years from now.

Long-Term Canopy Thinking

A tree planted today shades your home in 15 years. We think ahead about growth rate, mature size, and canopy shape — not just what looks good at the nursery.

Proper Planting Technique

More young trees die from being planted too deep than from disease or pests. TG-TreeCare follows ISA planting guidelines so your investment takes root and stays healthy.

What We Assess

Six factors that determine the right tree

Every planting recommendation Tyler makes is based on a real assessment of your site — not a guess or a generic suggestion. These are the factors that drive species selection.

Sun Exposure

Full sun, part shade, or full shade?

Soil Drainage

Well-drained, average, or wet?

Available Space

Mature height and canopy spread matter

Overhead Lines

Utility clearance affects species choice

Proximity to Structures

Roots and canopy need room to grow

Your Goals

Shade, privacy, aesthetics, wildlife?

What Kills Young Trees

Planting mistakes to avoid

Most young tree failures aren't random — they're the result of specific, preventable mistakes. TG-TreeCare avoids all of these by default.

Planting Too Deep

The most common — and most damaging — planting mistake. Burying the root flare prevents oxygen from reaching the roots, slowly girdling the tree over years. The trunk flare must sit at or just above grade.

Wrong Species for the Site

A tree that loves full sun planted in full shade, or a moisture-loving species in a dry, compacted area, will struggle its entire life. Species selection based on actual site conditions is non-negotiable.

Volcano Mulching

Piling mulch against the trunk — the so-called 'mulch volcano' — traps moisture against the bark, promotes rot, and invites insects and disease. Mulch should be 2–4 inches deep and kept away from the trunk.

Planting Under Utility Lines

A tree planted directly under power lines will need to be repeatedly topped or removed as it grows. Choose low-growing species for these areas — or plant elsewhere.

Ignoring Girdling Roots

Container-grown trees often have circling roots that need to be corrected at planting. Left alone, these roots eventually wrap around the trunk and strangle the tree from within.

Overwatering After Planting

More young trees are killed by overwatering than drought. Newly planted trees need consistent moisture — not saturated soil. We walk you through a watering schedule specific to your tree and site.

Common Questions

Planting FAQs

When is the best time to plant trees in Ohio?

Early fall is ideal — soil is still warm for root establishment but temperatures are cooler for the tree. Early spring is second-best. TG-TreeCare plants year-round and advises on timing during your estimate.

Do you help choose the species, or do I need to know what I want?

We handle selection. Tell Tyler what you're trying to achieve — shade, privacy, aesthetics, wildlife — and we'll match the right species to your site.

How big of a tree can you plant?

From small ornamentals to large balled-and-burlapped specimens. Cost scales with tree size. Tyler will walk you through options at different price points.

How long until the tree is established?

Most trees take 1–3 years to fully establish after planting. During this period, consistent watering is critical. We'll give you a specific care guide for your tree.

Can you plant near my house or fence?

Yes — with the right species and placement. We assess mature size, root behavior, and structural proximity before recommending where and what to plant.

Do you offer any guarantee on planted trees?

Ask Tyler directly. Guarantees depend on species, site conditions, and follow-through on post-planting care. We'll be upfront about what's realistic.
