Akron's trees grow in hard places.
From worker neighborhoods built a century ago to wooded West Akron lots and busy salted streets, Akron asks more of its trees than most suburbs do. Good care here starts with knowing which of those conditions your tree lives in.
Century-old neighborhoods on small lots
Neighborhoods like Firestone Park, Goodyear Heights, North Hill and Highland Square were built in the early 1900s on narrow lots, many with detached garages at the back and power drops running across the yard. The trees there are big and old, and they've had a century of sidewalk replacements, sewer work and pruning by whoever was available.
That combination makes Akron tree work more technical than it looks. A large maple behind a house on a forty-foot lot may have to come out piece by piece over a garage roof, with a neighbor's fence on one side and a power line on the other. We plan each of those jobs on site, and we're upfront when access, rigging or a crane changes the price.
West Akron's big trees and wooded slopes
West Akron is a different setting. The lots are larger, the oaks and beeches are older and many properties run down into wooded ravines toward Sand Run and the Cuyahoga Valley. These are trees people buy houses for, and the work is mostly about keeping them safe and healthy for another generation: structural pruning, cabling where a union is weak and diagnosing decline before it's advanced.
Slope properties need extra care. Trees on hillsides lean, roots grip shallow soil over clay and a failing tree can travel downhill farther than expected. If you have a big tree above the house on a slope, an assessment is worth more than a guess.
Street trees, salt and the city
Akron has a Tree Commission and a master tree planting plan for its street trees, which means the trees between the sidewalk and the street are generally the city's to plan and manage. If one of those trees is the problem, the city may be your first call. We'll tell you at the estimate whether a tree appears to be on your property or the public side.
Trees along Akron's busier roads also deal with road salt, which burns needles and leaves and builds up in the soil over winters. Salt damage often shows on the side of the tree facing the street. It's one of several stresses we look for during a plant health care visit.
