How we decide a tree should come down

Removal is the last option, not the first. When we look at a tree that a homeowner wants gone, we're weighing two things: how likely it is to fail, and what it would hit if it did. A dead limb over an empty corner of the yard is a different conversation than the same limb over a bedroom.

Some trees that look bad can be kept. A tree with one weak union might be a candidate for cabling and bracing. A tree that's thinning from root stress or a nutrient problem may respond to plant health care. A tree crowding a roof can often be pruned instead of removed. When removal really is the right call, because of advanced decay, a failing root plate, emerald ash borer, or a structural defect that can't be supported, we'll say so plainly and explain why.

The trees we recommend removing most often in Portage and Summit County are dead and dying ash, silver maples with cracked or included-bark unions over houses, Bradford pears that have started to split, and Norway spruce screens that have lost most of their lower needles. What changes the price of a removal

Two trees the same height can be very different jobs. The price is set by how much work and risk it takes to get the tree down without damaging anything, not just by the size of the tree. The factors that matter most:

• Targets. A tree over a house, garage, fence, pool or power service has to come down in controlled pieces instead of being felled.
• Access. Backyard trees behind fences and sheds mean more hand-carrying, smaller equipment, or a crane.
• Condition. Dead and decayed trees are less predictable and often can't be climbed safely, which changes the method.
• Size and spread. Bigger trees mean more rigging, more cuts and more material to process.
• Cleanup scope. Full haul-away, logs left for firewood, or wood left on site all change the day.
• Stump grinding. A separate service that can be added to the same visit.

How the work gets done: felling, rigging, and cranes

When there's open space for a tree to fall, felling is the simplest and least expensive method. Most residential trees in Kent, Stow and Cuyahoga Falls don't have that kind of room. For those, a climber works down the tree, cutting it into sections that are lowered on ropes through rigging points in the canopy. Each piece is controlled all the way to the ground, which is how a large tree comes out from between a house and a fence without touching either.

When a tree is too dead to climb, too big to rig safely, or leaning over a structure, a crane is often the safest choice. It lifts sections away instead of lowering them. It costs more per hour, but on the right job it's faster and removes most of the risk.

Whichever method fits, we plan it before the first cut: what each section weighs, where it will swing, and what the crew needs to protect.

When to schedule a removal in Northeast Ohio

Late fall through winter is the best time for most planned removals. The leaves are off, so the tree is lighter and the structure is easy to see. Frozen or firm ground protects lawns and driveways from equipment. Our spring soils, on the other hand, are usually saturated clay, and that's when heavy equipment leaves ruts that take a season to fix.

Some removals shouldn't wait for a season. Dead ash gets more brittle every year, and a tree with a fresh crack, a new lean, or a hanging limb over a target is a now problem. For storm damage, use our 24/7 emergency line.

Permits, tree lawns and neighbors

Most trees on private property in our area can be removed without a permit, but some cities have rules, and the strip between the sidewalk and the street, often called the tree lawn, frequently belongs to the city. If the tree is on a property line or belongs to a neighbor, talk to them before the work is scheduled. It saves a lot of trouble. We're happy to walk the tree with both of you.

Cleanup, the stump, and what comes next

Cleanup is included. Brush is chipped and hauled, wood is removed or cut to firewood length if you want to keep it, and the work area is raked and blown. We plan equipment paths to keep lawn and beds in good shape.
